From The Director

PCKs 25th Anniversary logo
As we celebrate our 25th Anniversary this month, I am incredibly proud to look back and reflect on all that we have done in the past 25 years. Not only have we offered an exceptional education to our students, but we have also provided a warm, nurturing school home for them. We have given our staff an inspiring and supportive place to work, and have created a thriving community for our families. There is a lot to be proud of, and I am so thankful for everyone who has played a part in our success.

In honor of our 25th Anniversary, we’ve compiled a list of just 25 of our many accomplishments. We hope you enjoy this look back at where we have been, and feel inspired about all we can do in the next 25 years.

  1. We moved from an innovative idea to an actual school when our doors opened on September 6, 1994 with 164 students.
  2. Technology class became part of the school day in 1998 when we hired our first tech teacher.
  3. 11661 N. Pine Drive became our new home in 2000.
  4. Since 2001, PCK has earned a John Irwin Schools of Excellence Award every year that the award was given.
  5. Our School Director, Teri Aplin, was hired in May, 2002. She has led our school significantly longer than any previous Director.
  6. In 2004, our first addition added space for the middle school, as well as our stage. We also moved our play area from the parking lot to our current “back yard.”
  7. PCK’s first musical production, Forty-five Minutes From Broadway opened in 2005. Students have performed in 22 more PCK musicals since then.
  8. Readers got involved in the fun of Battle Of The Books in 2008. Our teams won the District championship in 2009, and area championships in 2013, 2014, 2015, 2017, 2018, and 2019. This year our 5th grade team took 2nd place in the District!
  9. Our first Governor’s Distinguished Improvement Award was earned in 2010, and we’ve received the award every year since.
  10. In 2010, PCK students began participating in area math competitions. We have had a vibrant Competitive Math Club ever since.
  11. Our middle school got its own space when we built the two-story addition to the building in 2011.
  12. Younger children joined the PCK family when our preschool opened in 2011.
  13. Exceptional middle school students could join the National Junior Honor Society when we received our NJHS charter on November 8, 2011.
  14. 3rd grade teacher Lisa Sitzmann won a personal financial literacy grant in 2011 for her M&M budget program. She was awarded with a class set of ipod touch devices to use with her program.
  15. Instilling a love of reading in our students climbed to a new height when our resource teachers launched our Literacy Night program in the fall of 2012. It has been a multi-grade annual (sometimes more than once a year) event ever since.
  16. In 2013 our Boys Soccer team won the championship with an undefeated season. They went on to repeat this feat in 2014, 2015, and 2018.
  17. As part of our commitment to developing future leaders of character, we built upon our existing character education program with the hiring of our Character Coach and the addition of weekly Character Coaching in every K-6 classroom in 2015.
  18. PCK was recognized as a National Blue Ribbon School in 2016.
  19. Our 2016/17 game-themed yearbook, PCKopoly, won the “Best Yearbook Award.”
  20. In 2017 PCK was recognized as a National School Of Character.
  21. The building known as the 5th/6th Grade Wing, which also houses our beautiful Sports Gym, opened in 2017.
  22. Students and their families got a chance to explore cultures from around the world when our annual International Festival started in 2018.
  23. The PCK Preschool’s outdoor classroom was built (and featured on 9News) in 2018.
  24. Through the years, and through very lean budget years, we have always supported the Music, PE, and Art programs. Not only have we never cut staffing or classes, but we have purchased instruments and materials every year, increased staff, and improved our physical facilities to accommodate these subjects. We firmly believe that cultured American citizens need foundational knowledge in these subjects and that children need a well rounded education with outlets of expression in different areas.
  25. The 2018/19 7th and 8th Grade Girls Volleyball teams went undefeated during the season and won the Championship, coached by Aundrea Waltz and Danielle Frare.

Imagine what this list will be like in another 25 years! I am looking forward to seeing what the future brings.

Mrs. Aplin

Adopt A Flower Bed With PCK

We are partnering with the Town of Parker to help keep Discovery Park clean by adopting several flower beds. We are looking for volunteers to help weed, deadhead flowers, pick up trash, and keep the mulch tidy in beds near the front entrance of the Parker Library. Many hands make light work, so please see this SignUpGenius and volunteer to help! While you are there, stop by the library to keep a fresh supply of books for the Summer Reading Challenge and summer reading homework.

House Bill 1032 Won’t Impact PCK

You have probably heard news reports about HB 1032, which impacts the way schools present sex education. The bill allows charter schools to obtain a waiver, so PCK’s health program will not change. You can see a summary of the bill here, and it includes a link to the full bill.

Talking To Your Kids About School Shootings

If your child is still processing the recent shooting at STEM Highlands Ranch, this article may help. As always, please reach out to your child’s teacher if additional assistance is needed.
