From The Director

If you ask me what I am most thankful for, I’d have to say…

  • every smile and hug I receive from your children each day
  • the laughter I hear among the students
  • the hard work and dedicated effort I see daily…from both students and staff
  • the wonderfully generous PCK community
  • involved PCK parents who would move mountains to help their child(ren) succeed
  • the passion, purpose, and commitment of the PCK staff
  • our police force, firefighters, and military personnel
  • the beautiful State of Colorado
  • music, art, and great books
  • summertime and sunsets
  • opportunities to travel and explore the world
  • my wonderful family
  • good health
  • great friends
  • my faith
  • each and every one of you, my PCK family!

I know a woman who ends each day by making a list of all that she’s thankful for. Some days her list is long, and other days it might be short, but in every day there is always something she is thankful for. Sometimes when we stop and take time to reflect, we notice people, opportunities, and other blessings in life that we are truly thankful for. What are you thankful for? I encourage you this Thanksgiving season to make a list as I have above. You will be amazed by all you have to be thankful for in life.

Wishing all PCK families a very Happy Thanksgiving! May your holiday be filled with family, fun times, great food, and memories to last a lifetime.

Mrs. Aplin

Happy Thanksgiving!

PCK will be closed November 22-26. Enjoy the holiday with your family and friends!

Our Lost and Found Is Overflowing!

Please check to make sure your child has his/her coat, sweatshirt, lunchbox, water bottle, and any other items that may have found a home in our lost and found. Any items left in the lost and found will be donated after Thanksgiving, so please remind your child to come claim any lost items. Also, please make sure your child’s first and last name are on all items coming to school.

100 Coats for Colorado

PCK’s National Junior Honor Society is holding a three-day coat drive from Monday, Nov. 27th – Wednesday, Nov. 29th. Our goal is to collect 100 coats. Please bring your NEW AND GENTLY USED coats to the designated boxes at the school’s entrances. You can help us reach our goal by purchasing a coat while you are out doing your holiday shopping. This is an easy way to make a big difference in a fellow Coloradan’s life.

The Results Are In

Thank you to those who responded to the SAC’s mini-survey about our new hot lunch provider, My Kid’s Lunch (MKL). We will be sharing this feedback with MKL on Monday, November 20th, with the hope that they will find it useful and be able to adjust their program to better serve those who utilize the hot lunch program here at PCK. Below is a summary of the survey results:

#1  Has your child tried our new hot lunch program this year?
85% Yes, 15% No

#2  Would you consider fast food vendors to be a desirable hot lunch option (e.g. Panera, Kneaders, Panda Express, Subway or Chick-fil-A, etc.)?
81% Yes, 19% No

#3  If your child has not ordered a hot lunch this year, please tell us why?

13%  Prefer to make own lunch at home, 16%  Don’t like the menu choices offered, 3%  Feel the meal price is too expensive, 42%  Indicated ‘Other reason’

Examples of other reasons included food allergies, kids preferred last vendor better, my child is a picky eater, and taste…my child didn’t like the taste.

#4  Are you satisfied with the ordering process?
76%  Yes, 24%  No

#5  Does your child like the food served by MKL (taste, quality portion size)?
30%  Yes, 44%  No, 26%  Indicated ‘Other response’

Examples of reasons for ‘Other’ included – kids don’t like fish options, meat was a bit undercooked, choices not ‘kid-friendly’ or familiar.

#6  What are your child’s top 3 favorite menu items?
1. Pizza – real pizza slices, 2. Chicken nuggets, 3. Pasta/Mac & Cheese

#7   What would you like to see offered for lunch more often?
1. Pizza, 2. Subs, 3. Grilled Cheese, 4. Hamburger/fries

#8  What feedback do you have for our hot lunch provider?
Varied feedback.  Most comments related to the food choices, temperature of the hot food, and some mentioned the cost.

PCK’s Math Team Has Its First Competition

On Saturday, November 11th, PCK’s Competitive Math Team attended their first competition of the year. Mathapalooza is sponsored and run by Mu Alpha Theta, the Math Honors Society at Highlands Ranch High school. Cimarron, STEM, Rocky Heights, and Cresthill Middle schools all competed for top honors. Congratulations to Bryce Wetzel, who scored 5th place in the competition!

We Are Working To Snuff Out The Sniffles

We have definitely entered the cold and flu season here at PCK! Between kids and teachers, we have seen a number of confirmed cases of Influenza A and strep. We have sent reminders to parents about general health precautions that our nurse recommends to help keep everyone healthy, but we also wanted to share with you some of the precautions we take internally to ensure our building is as safe and ‘germ-free’ as possible:

  • Our nightly cleaning crew is performing a deeper, sanitizing clean in hard-hit classrooms and common areas to ensure lingering germs are removed daily
  • The cleaning crew is also sanitizing door knobs, chair backs, crash bars on doors, and the stair railing up to middle school
  • The Tech teachers are making an effort to have the computers and desktops wiped more frequently
  • Many, if not most, teachers daily disinfect student desktops
  • The health room door, cot, chairs and faucet are disinfected multiple times each day
  • Students and staff who are sick, or feeling sick, are strongly encouraged to stay home until they are better.

We are pleased to report that the viruses seem to be running their course and our attendance numbers are back up in the ’normal or typical’ ranges for this time of year. We are hopeful that after the long Thanksgiving break everyone will come back healthier, and any lingering cold/flu germs in the building will have had a chance to die out.

Are You Ready for Snow Season?

The weather has been nice this week, but we know in Colorado it can snow at any time. Be prepared for school delays or closures by keeping your contact information in Infinite Campus up to date and following the District’s emergency communication channels. You can always check the District’s School Closure Status Page  for information about weather closures and delayed start times. For more options on how to get weather-related information, click here.

We Have Fabulous Veterans!

Our Veteran’s Day event was a great success thanks to all of the wonderful Veterans who came to our assembly, and those who spoke in our classrooms afterward. Our students loved hearing the personal stories and seeing the gear (the helmet pictured here was a big hit) and keepsakes the Veterans brought.

Thanks also to the Boy Scouts who led our opening and closing flag ceremonies. They did a fantastic job.

We couldn’t have done it without the hard work of our Veteran’s Day Planning Committee. A huge THANK YOU goes out to Matt and Tracy Keil, Blaise Singer (who put up the beautiful Veteran’s Day bulletin board) and Raychel Jones (who brought all of the food for the breakfast). You all made it happen. Thank you!

8th Grade Field Trip to Colorado Mountain Club

Last week our 8th graders went to the Colorado Mountain Club to learn about weather, friction, lighting, and more. They also got to go rock climbing, and a had a fun day!

First Grade Superbowl Champ

First grader Jesse Dame’s Hawks team won the Arapahoe Youth League Superbowl last weekend, beating Cherry Creek 13-12. Great job, Jesse!

Thank you!

Thank you to our top five volunteers for the month of October. Between the Book Fair and Halloween, we had many opportunities to serve in October. The following parents logged the most volunteer hours last month:

Kristen Campbell
Beth Teran
Megan Teerlinck
Renee Krupa
Erin Dobkin

We also had four new additions to our 40 Hour Club. These volunteers have logged over 40 hours of service during the current school year:

Suzanne Velasquez
Renee Derrick
Kristen Campbell
Janice Moore

The winner of the “Volunteer of the Month” parking spot for the month of November is Kristen Campbell.

PCK wouldn’t be the school it is without the wonderful support of our parent volunteers. Thank you to ALL of our amazing volunteers! Keep logging those hours.
