Spring Break

March 17 - 21
Enjoy!!

FROM THE DIRECTOR

Hair, hair, it’s everywhere! While this may sound like a line from a Dr. Seuss story, it’s actually a reference to a growing issue here at school. Too many of our male students have hair lengths (or bangs) that do not meet the parameters of our school dress code. To our parents I say, “Help, help, we need your help!”, and to all the students whose hair continues to be an issue…Snip, snip, no more lip! (Humor respectfully intended)

The schools’ policy on hair states, “Boys’ hair must be neat and well-trimmed at all times and fall above the shirt collar; bangs cannot cover eyes. Boys’ hair may not be worn in a ponytail, braids, Mohawk, rat tails, tall spikes or shaved with words, symbols or initials.” (Per the PCKCS Parent Handbook.)

Over the spring break, I would appreciate parent support in resolving this issue. If your student’s hair does not fall well above the shirt collar of his school uniform, or if his bangs are so long that they hang over his eyes, please schedule your child for an appointment with his favorite hair stylist or barber. Immediately following spring break, we will make a point of checking haircuts to ensure compliance. Students whose hair does not meet the dress code standard will receive dress code violations until the hair is cut. We understand that students are dependent on their parents to make haircut arrangements, and this is why I am asking for your support. Thank you for making this matter a priority.

Attendance Policy Update

The OC, along with several PCKCS parents, met last Thursday night to discuss the school’s attendance policy. After a brief recap of the issues that prompted the policy review, the conversation shifted to a discussion of possible solutions. In the end, here is what the OC concluded:

• The current policy is good; no significant changes will be made
• Criteria for determining whether an absence is excused or unexcused needs to be established and communicated to parents
• A process for requesting an excused absence for a special event (e.g. vacation outside of normal school breaks) also needs to be established and communicated; this process will require, at a minimum, advance notice by the parents and a discussion with the School Director.
• Habitually tardy students should receive consequences.

Once a set of criteria and a new process has been established, we will notify all PCKCS families and make the appropriate changes in the Parent Handbook to reflect the new criteria and process.

Again, thank you to all the parents who attended last week’s meeting and shared their thoughts/ideas. I think we can all feel proud of the collaboration that took place.
