Are you wondering what happened with Senate Bill 61 – the charter school finance equalization bill?
Well, for starters, it was modified, renamed, and passed through the House as House Bill 17-1375. The GREAT news is it passed! This is the outcome we were hoping for, and I want to thank all parents who responded to my requests to send email, write letters and make phone calls to our legislators. It made a difference!
HB 17-1375 will impact charter schools in the following ways:
- It will result in approximately $20M in additional annual revenue for charter schools across the state each year.
- It fortifies over $40 M in existing MLO (Mill Levy Override) revenue so that charters can have greater assurance about relying on existing MLO funds into the future.
- It establishes a framework for state CSI (Charter School Institute) equalization to which funds can be added in future years to help level the playing field for students attending CSI schools (PCK is not a CSI school).
The benefits of this bill will not kick in until 2019-20, but the good news is that new money is coming. In our case, we believe this bill will result in additional MLO funds for PCK because we are currently only receiving a 100% pro rata share of MLO funds from two of DCSD’s three mill levies, and there is a possibility of a fourth MLO coming to a vote in 2018. If it also passes (and we will work hard to help ensure that it does), we stand to receive even more MLO funds down the road. These monies are very important to our ability to provide both quality programs and staffing to meet the every changing needs of our students.

Building Project Update
The new building project is moving right along. I have had the opportunity to tour the building, and it looks AMAZING! Wait until the kids see it! The new building is tracking right on schedule, with a projected delivery date of August 12th. This will give staff some time to move in, settle, and prepare for the start of school on the 21st/23rd of August.
The interior retrofit project will commence right after Memorial Day…once the staff has had a chance to move out of impacted areas within the existing building. Once the coast is clear, the interior work will begin on our new Tech/Media/Library area, new Learning Lab, and Front Office and Health room modification. Additionally, we are installing a new concrete pathway along the North side of our building from the North fire exit down to the playground. This will provide safer passage for our students and staff during evacuation drills. The existing stage/music room will also receive a new floor over the summer.
All of these improvements will allow us to continue providing the highest quality educational programming and safety measures for our students. We will plan a big ‘reveal’ during our Open House/Registration event on August 17th.
On a related note, you may have noticed that our backyard playing field is destroyed! The combination of construction staging and traffic, along with 700 pairs of feet consolidated into a smaller playing surface area, has compacted the ground under what was our grassy field to such a degree that the grass is gone! The PCK Board is reviewing ALL possible options to resolve this (expensive) problem by fall, and we will keep the PCK community posted during the summer as to meeting dates and field options under consideration. All options are currently on the table and Board members are actively gathering information for consideration and a decision…most likely in early June so that we can implement a solution by fall. We will keep you posted via push emails once school is out.
As we approach the final week of the 2017-18 school year . . . .
I would like to take this opportunity to thank all PCK families for a BANNER school year! As a 2016 Blue Ribbon School and a 2017 National School of Character, we have much to celebrate! The strong and vital partnership between staff, students and parents continues to provide the critical foundation for student success here at PCK. Additionally, our larger parent organizations such as the Board, PTA, Foundation, and SAC consistently support our efforts through their leadership, fundraising, community-building, or academic support efforts! ALL parent volunteers, no matter the task, round out what’s needed to make each year a success. Thank you, thank you, thank you for all you do for PCK, our students, and the staff! We are all passionately committed to the shared goal of providing the highest quality educational experience for each and every PCK student, and this shared goal drives everything we do day in and day out, year in and year out. As the summer approaches, it is time for us all to rest and enjoy some well-deserved ’down time.’ I wish all PCK families a fun, relaxing and enjoyable summer break, and the entire PCK staff looks forward to welcoming you back in August for the 2017-18 school year!

Please send your kids in with those uniform pieces that they are growing out of, and they get a donut as they head into school! We will host a Used Uniform Sale in July (check school calendar) so you can grab those next sizes that you need.
National Junior Honor Society Inductees
Field Day – May 26th

What to Wear: Wear you class color, athletic shoes, shorts or sweats, and a hat. We will be getting wet! Do NOT wear dresses, swimsuits, or flip flops.
What to Bring: Water bottle and sunscreen.
Drop off will start at 8:45 a.m. Students must check in with their teachers.
Reminder: Students only will be participating at the stations. The games are designed for school age children and we ask that siblings not take part in the station game. Please supervise younger siblings at all times.
Field Day will end at 12:30 p.m. and class parties will be from 12:30 – 1:00 p.m. Please sign your student out with their teacher before you leave.
Special treat this year – Kona Shaved Ice for class parties!
The Kona Ice truck will be at Field Day from 12:30 – 2:30 p.m. for anyone wanting to purchase the Kona Ice of their choice: $3, $4, and $5 cups. 20% of the gross sales from this event will go to PCK!

Substitute Teacher Opportunities
Are you interested in joining PCK’s pool of exceptional substitute teachers? We are looking for dynamic, flexible people to join our PCK sub team for the 2017-2018 school year. Substitute teachers must be able to implement existing lesson plans, provide student instruction in a variety of classroom topics and demonstrate strong classroom management. We have opportunities in the preschool, elementary and middle schools for next school year. Champions Summer Camp is here for Parker Core Knowledge!
Champions has secured a spot at Knowledge Beginnings in Meridian off of I-25 and Lincoln Ave for Summer Camp! The enrollment fee of $100 has been discounted to $50.
Please send in your completed forms to secure your spot. The forms are all due by May 5, 2017. Knowledge Beginnings is a Champions sister company. With plans for two field trips a week and a splash park on the premises, there will be lots of fun.
