From The Director

Getting real for a moment…In light of last week’s shooting tragedy in Parkland, FL, I want to let you all know that the safety and security of every PCK student and staff member is a responsibility that I never take for granted. Every morning when you drop your student(s) off with us at carpool, we have an implied agreement that we will return them to you safely at the end of the day…tired, but safe. You count on this and I want you to know that the trust you put in us, in our system and our security, is of paramount importance.

By way of reminder and encouragement to you that safety is always in the front of our minds, I thought I would review some of our safety policies and practices:

~On a daily basis, we maintain a secured perimeter. This mean all outside doors are locked and all parents and visitors must be let into the building by a staff member.

~On a daily basis, all parents and visitors must sign in at the front office where they are given a green security sticker to wear.

~On a daily basis, teachers or recess aides accompany our students from one location to another; they are never unsupervised when traveling as a group.

~On a daily basis, our security cameras are rolling both inside and outside the building, and we monitor student travel between our two buildings.

~On a daily basis, our staff remains alert to anything that might seem ‘off’ or suspicious, especially in our parking lot and backyard areas.

~On a daily basis, cars without a red, yellow, or green carpool tag are directed to park and pick up their student(s) at the front office.

~Several times on a daily basis, the Douglas County School Marshals walk our building, both inside and outside, and once per week one of our amazing parent volunteers (who also happens to be a police officer) donates his time to hang out and monitor our building.

~On a near weekly basis, we practice our Standard Response Protocols (SRPs), with evacuate, lockdowns and shelter in place drills. All drills are logged with the district.

~Annually, the PCK staff is trained on the four SRPs, and periodically during the year the staff receives updates on various safety related issues.

Additionally, DCSD’s security department provides resources and guidance to all schools, including charters. The Security team is ALWAYS available to provide advice or guidance about safety/security matters, big or small, and we consult with them regularly about safety questions. If you ever see or hear anything that causes you concern here at school, please do not hesitate to let me know. The more of us that remain vigilant, the safer we all will be.

Thank you for supporting our safety and security measures.

Mrs. Aplin

P.S.  I was scheduled to resume my series on our parent volunteer organizations, but I felt this topic was timely and important given recent events. I will write about the Foundation at PCK next Thursday.

Come See Screenagers Tonight!

Don’t miss our screening of the documentary film, Screenagers tonight at 6:30 pm. This movie, directed by a physician, explores the impact of a digital world on our kids and how parents can help them navigate it. Feel free to invite your friends and neighbors – all are welcome. Childcare will be available for children ages 3 and up. We have a Parent Guide that will be passed out tonight, and will also be distributed in next week’s Thursday Folders. All PCK parents in attendance will receive a dress down day pass for their student(s).  See the trailer here.

Our 5th – 8th grade students will see the student version of the film on Friday, so be prepared for a meaningful discussion with your child by seeing the move for yourself tonight. There will be very limited parking tomorrow and we will not have chairs set up for the student viewing, so parents are asked to see the movie tonight, not tomorrow during the day.

Looking For A Way To Volunteer?

Our PTA is looking for new members. All time spent helping with the PTA, including being at the meetings, counts towards your volunteer commitment. This is not only a really fun way to help the school, but it is also a great way to get to know other PCK parents. It is a nice option for parents working outside the home since most meetings and events are in the evenings or on weekends. Please contact Tricia at cp4355@yahoo.com or 303.517.5482 if you are interested or would like more information.

Can You Send In Some Snacks?

PARCC testing will be here before we know it, and testing snacks are a highlight for many students. Please sign-up to bring in PARCC test snacks by March 23rd to help our students ace their tests! You can use the link below to sign up.

Hot Lunch News

After Spring Break, we will have a new hot lunch vendor. Wholesome Food Services offers a variety of lunch options to meet many dietary needs, including gluten free, vegetarian, and whole grain choices. They also have selections from local restaurants we think our students will love. Additionally, pizza will be an option with Wholesome Food Services, so we will no longer have “pizza days” from Papa John’s.

Our current vendor, My Kid’s Lunch, has already issued refunds for lunches ordered past March 16. Please watch for your refund and contact My Kid’s Lunch with any questions about your account.

Ordering information will be available soon, so please watch for details in the PCK Weekly News.

Thank you!

Thank you to the Coors family for getting a class set of Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol while they were in London. We have been trying to find the edition our second grade uses for three years now, but it is not available the US. The Coors family spent time on their vacation in England going to five different bookstores to find enough books to complete a class set. Thank you so much for the gift of your time and the generosity of the book donation!
