From the Director

Grit to GREAT! I mentioned during Back-to-School Night in August that we will be focusing on helping all students become ‘grittier’ this year.  What is grit you ask?  Grit is defined as: Perseverance, passion, and stamina for long-term goals.  Kids today, many of them, seem to give up easily…they want problems solved instantly, obstacles removed from their path immediately, and they seem at a loss for what to do when life throws them a curve ball.

During October, our character trait of the month is Determinationwhich I think we can determinationall agree is an important component of grit. Determination speaks specifically to the ability to stay focused on a goal, regardless of the opposition. We will touch on grit this month through our character activities, and I encourage all parents to use our monthly table tent to jump-start home-based discussions about the importance of determination and grit. As parents and school staff, we must work together to help our students develop the skills and the resolve to persevere in tough situations?

Below are two links to articles about GRIT.  One speaks to the importance of instilling a ‘growth mindset’ in our children, rather than a ‘fixed mindset’, and the other focuses on what to look for in determining if you have grit. I found both interesting and I hope you will too. Periodically, throughout the school year, I will share additional articles and information I come across that shed some light on this important task of helping kids develop more grit.  Conversely, if you come across articles or resources on GRIT that you think other parents might benefit from, please pass them along to me and I will share with the rest of the parent community here at PCK.  Let’s work together to help all students become ‘grittier’ this year!

High School Open House for 6th – 8th  students and parents

Parker Core Knowledge is hosting a high school information night for 6th – 8th grade students and their families on October 20th from 6:30 – 8:00 p.m. We are inviting representatives from all the local high schools, private high schools, and alternative high schools to be on hand to answer questions and provide information about their respective schools.  Students and parents are encouraged to attend together in order to explore the various high school options.  Last year was our first year hosting such an event, and it was extremely well received.  This year we hope to have even more students, families, and schools attend.

Info Meeting – Thursday, Oct 27th at 5:00 – 6:30 p.m.

1st – 4th Grades (Parents)

We are almost halfway through the first semester of the year, and it is time to check in with parents about our new GoMath program.  We have heard various comments about the new program from, ‘We love it’ to ‘It’s so different’ or ‘It takes so long for the kids to do their homework.’  We are prepared to hear parent comments about the new program, and to answer questions about how best to help your child with math at home.

Please consider joining us for this interactive session on Thursday, October 27th from 5-6:30 p.m. here at school.  Our Math Department Head, Mrs. Bender, along with one math teacher from each grade that uses the new math program, will be on hand to answer parent questions and share about their experiences with the students in class.

In order to ensure we select the appropriately sized space for our meeting, please RSVP with Mrs. Randazzo and be sure to indicate your child’s grade level.  We hope to see you on the 27th.

Happenings in Technology Class….

Technology and Core Knowledge classes join forces several times throughout the year by getting our students to work on integrated projects. The idea behind this is to extend what students are learning in the Core Knowledge curriculum through meaningful technology related project.

For example, in fourth grade, as an extension of a unit they just completed in social studies around agricultural production around the United States, students are working on researching recipes and formatting a menu in technology class. Teams of students are assigned to a region and are tasked with creating a menu using formatting skills they are learning in technology classes.
In addition, Mrs. Becker’s sixth grade social studies students are working on creating a website for an Ancient Greek City. This project is an update of the same project which was previously done on poster board. Students research ancient Greece, extending and utilizing what they learned in Social studies as well as learn advanced skills on website creation using Google Sites.
